The Mythical Man Month
If you haven’t read this book yet, go get it.. This book is often referred to as “The Bible” of software project management (the author jokes that, just like the real Bible, “everybody reads it but nobody does anything about it!”) This does in fact seem to be true at a large number of software companies.
The thesis of this book is that adding more people to an already late project makes it later. The article on Wikipedia explains it better than I can – so if you’re a project manager, work in software, or are thinking of getting into it, do yourself a favor and go read the Wikipedia entry (or better yet, buy the book).
Now – go do something about it!
